Bob Speed is an avid outdoorsman and hunter. His works are inspired by the many wonderful hours he has spent in pursuit of these magnificent animals. His art is an attempt to recall and share some of the many memorable outings with his hunting pals. He brings a respectful and authentic viewpoint of the West while his works reflect the power and majesty of its wildlife. Bob is a self-taught sculptor. Growing up in west Texas, he was exposed to ranching at an early age and developed a strong appreciation for that life style and for western and wildlife art. He has captured the intensity, emotion, and energy in each of his sculptures. He brings the love of telling a story through his work as exemplified in the unique name of each of his pieces. Bob has an abiding interest in depicting accurately and authentically the very mood of these animals. His first works depicted the majestic animals of the Rocky Mountains in the "High Country Heads" collection. This series includes sculptures of elk, mule deer, and big horn sheep. It was based on his personal observations and focuses on the details represented by the names of each piece. He captures quiet moments emphasizing interesting details often overlooked by others. His images strive to express the mystique and temperament of these majestic creatures while conveying his passion and understanding of each subject and unique situation. Bob has been a successful businessman for over thirty years in Houston, Texas. He was in the securities business for almost twenty years. He was one of the founders of a large financial institution, formed by a multi-family housing development company , and has spent extensive time in Eastern Siberia negotiating oil and gas, pipeline and timber ventures. His works have appeared in galleries in Aspen, Vail, and Telluride, CO; Jackson WY; and Carmel, CA. He has worked closely through the years with many worthwhile groups and his pieces heave helped to benefit groups such as the American Cancer Society, Quail Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, The Gulf Coast Conservation Association, The Albany Old Jail Museum, Edna Gladney Adoption Agency, and The Kinkaid Educational Foundation.
